Why Anyone Pays LegalZoom More

Because the name does work a cheaper name cannot.

LegalZoom has been in this market longer than most of its competitors have existed, at a scale that funds genuine support infrastructure and a catalogue reaching well past agent service. For an owner who wants one recognizable vendor holding the company's legal admin, that is a coherent thing to purchase. Nobody has to apologize for choosing the known quantity.

Just be clear that recognition is the premium. It does not buy a different legal status.

The Number Renews Without Asking

$249 a year, flat, auto-renewing, with no first-year discount we could locate.

Say the good part first. No teaser means no unpleasant surprise in year two: the rate you sign up at is the rate you keep. Structurally that is cleaner than several cheaper-looking offers in this category.

The problem is only the size of it. $249 is the highest flat annual price in our Florida comparison, and it buys an appointment the state defines in a single sentence: a named agent with a Florida street address, available during business hours, receiving service of process for the entity.

Here is a comparison worth sitting with. Florida charges an LLC $138.75 for its annual report, the only recurring bill the state itself sends you. LegalZoom's agent fee runs $110.25 above that. The government filing costs less than the service of receiving mail about it.

Over five years, $249 a year totals $1,245. Five years at $99 totals $495. The gap is $750, spent on the same line of the same public record.

$99, and the List of Exceptions Is Empty

Ninety-nine dollars a year in Florida. The renewal is ninety-nine dollars. No premium plan sits behind it and no compliance package waits at checkout.

Filing Your Way Off LegalZoom in Florida

Auto-renewal means the calendar is working against you, so here is the whole procedure in order.

Appoint the new agent first. You cannot complete the filing without one, because the incoming agent has to sign an acceptance, and you should not create a gap in coverage regardless.

Then file. An LLC submits INHS18, the LLC statement of change, with $25, to the Registration Section of the Division of Corporations at Florida's Department of State. Corporations use a different document, CR2E045, and pay $35. The change provision behind the filing is Fla. Stat. § 605.0114. The form asks for the entity name, the Sunbiz document number, who is leaving the role, who is taking it, and the Florida street address that becomes the registered office.

Or take the shortcut. If the annual report window is open and yours is still unfiled, designate the new agent on that report between January 1 and May 1 and skip the separate filing entirely.

Then confirm. Search your entity on Sunbiz and look at the agent block. When it shows the new name and address, the change is real.

Then cancel LegalZoom. In that order, never before it. An entity sitting on the public record with no functioning agent is exposed to exactly the sort of missed service that becomes a default judgment, and a cancellation can wait a few days.
